| | | A recommendation of a particular book does not necessarily endorse its author, or everything its author believes. Obviously not all the authors in this list are independent Baptists; nonetheless, there are certain truths we can glean from within the writings of the following books: The Coming Economic Armageddon Dr. David Jeremiah This is one of the most exciting and relevant books that I have read in a long time! Dr. David Jeremiah masterfully connects the dots of the failing global markets and the rise of the antichrist. Each chapter will capture your attention and refuse to let go until you have read through the entire book. Dr. Jeremiah is a sound pastor, Bible-teacher, and prophetical authority. He logically uncovers how our failing markets and current financial crisis will give rise to a new global economy pushed by the spirit of antichrist. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ! The Temple and Bible Prophecy Randall Price This is an exhaustive work concerning the temple and its role on the prophetical calendar. This book has been in my library for several years and have recently rediscovered the significance of this important subject in bible prophecy. Randall Price makes a compelling case for the soon return of Jesus Christ and how the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem is essential for certain prophecies to take place. Although this book was written over ten years ago, you would think it was hot off the press. Anyone interested in bible prophecy and the role of the temple should read this book. America's God and Country: Encyclopedia of Quotations William J. Federer This great book contains over 700 pages of brilliant and thought-provoking quotes from the great men who built our nation and provided the framework for our Christian heritage. Federer has compiled thousands of quotes from presidents, preachers, missionaries, inventors, politicians, and scholars. This book even documents the standards of convictions of such schools as Yale, Harvard, and Princeton when they stood as Christian institutions. You will be greatly blessed to have this book at your disposal. Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation John F. Walvoord Dr. Walvoord opens the door to John's Revelation by using the book of Daniel as a key. He highlights the significant prophetic passages of Daniel and shows how God used a young Hebrew man exiled in Babylonian captivity to interpret the apocalyptic future. Walvoord's sound exposition of the Scriptures is a favorite of many when it comes to eschatological discussion. Things to Come J. Dwight Pentecost Many consider Pentecost to be among the elite authorities of systematic theology and eschatology, and this book makes a solid cause for such a notion. He deals with this vast and enigmatic subject with extreme care and sensibility. Although he outlines various interpretations, he systematically proves how the premillenial view is the solid and scriptural answer for "things to come." The Coming Prince Robert Anderson In The Coming Prince, Anderson shows how the apocalyptic stage is set in the book of Daniel. This book deals with the prophecies that were given in Daniel, and how they will be fulfilled in conjuction with the book of Revelation. Anderson deals minutely with the 70 weeks of Daniel's prophecy, the "times of the Gentiles," and the great statue of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. The Book of Revelation Clarence Larkin Larkin's illustrative commentary on the book of Revelation is a classic and must-have for every student of the Word of God. Though written almost 100 years ago, this book is contemporary to our times. The charts, diagrams, pictures, and illustrations help the reader to see the dynamic truth which is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Though Larkin can be extreme in his hermeneutics, he is a good read for the subject. The Steps of a Good Man Eldon Martens Recently, Mr. Martens went home to be with the Lord, yet his burden and passion for biblical manhood will carry on through another generation. It was Martens desire to share with men the necessity of being a role-model for their children, and to walk in alignment with the Word of God. I met Dr. Martens several years ago, and he gave me a copy of this book. I am thankful to have met him, and more thankful that he shared his heart with me about the importance of walking as a "good man." Every father should read through this book yearly. Dispensationalism Charles C. Ryrie One cannot truly have a good theological system, or properly interpret the Scriptures unless he understands the significance of the dispensations. Ryrie, a favorite theologian of many defines, dissects, and declares the nuances of the different dispensations. Exposing the fallacies of covenant theology and ultradispensationalism, Ryrie confirms the differences between Israel and the church. This was a text-book of mine in Bible college, and I often refer to its principles as I read and study the Scriptures. Grace: An Exposition of God's Marvelous Gift Lewis Sperry Chafer I have yet to find another book that so exhaustively deals with the subject of grace as does this book. Chafer, the founder of Dallas Theological Seminary, carefully leads the reader into the depths of God's plan of salvation. Chafer reveals our guilt and condemnation as lawbreakers, and reminds us that there is no other way to be justified in the presence of God outside of His grace. The book is logically arranged and biblically-rooted. You will be thrilled as you read through the pages and discover afresh the marvelous grace of God. Biblical Creationism Dr. Henry Morris This is a great apologetic work in the area of creationism. This particular subject of the Bible is a continual controversy in our public school systems. We need to know what the Bible says about our origin, and be able to logically defend our stand. You will find the subject of this book to be closely tied to its title. From the Genesis account to the apocalyptic work of John, Morris shows how every section of the Bible provides substantial proof of a literal-seven-day creation account. Preaching and Preachers D. Martyn Lloyd Jones This classic by Dr. Jones challenges the man of God to be just that- a man of God who takes the Word of God and preaches from a life of holiness and dedication. This is perhaps the most influential book I have read in the area of what it means to be a preacher of the Bible. In this book you will discover how Jones placed a high primacy on preaching. From the character of the preacher to sermon preparation to the mechanics of delivery, Jones will challenge your heart and cause you to recognize how seriously this business of preaching should be taken. The Unfolding Drama of Redemption William Graham Scroggie Every student of the Bible should have this classic Bible-survey book by Scroggie. This was a required text book for some of my graduate courses, and it proved to be a great investment for my library. Scroggie explains how the Lord revealed His plan to humanity much like a director would coordinate a theatrical production. Thorough in it's scope, practical in its evaluation, and logical in its sequence, The Unfolding Drama of Redemption is an overview of the entire Bible. A basic, must-have for the serious Bible student. The Parables and Metaphors of our Lord G. Campbell Morgan Morgan is a favorite of mine. He offers deep and spiritual insight into most of his writings- this book is no exception. Morgan gives expository explanation and spiritual application with each parable given to us by our Lord. This book is actually a collection of lectures that were given by Morgan at Westminster Bible School in England. Morgan instructs his students on the importance of parabolic interpretation along with vivid insight into each parable. This book is full of golden nuggets from the parables of Christ. The Life of David Brainerd Oswald J. Smith Speaking of David Brainerd, A.J. Gordan said, "The marvelous missionary revival in the nineteenth century was due in large part to his prayers." Because he could not speak their language, Brainerd, the great missionary to the Indians, would pray and fast for days begging God to be light among the spiritual darkness of the Indians. This book is a compilation of Brainerd's journal entries, as well as a brief history of his conversion experience, his call to mission work, and his last days. Great reprint by Crown Christian Publications. Tom Malone: The Preacher from Pontiac Joyce Vick I have read through this biography of Dr. Malone several times, and every time I read through the pages I am stirred and encouraged how God can use men for His honor and glory. From the words of Dr. Malone himself, "God is in the business of taking nobodies, and making somebodies out of them." This book chronicles how God made Malone into a somebody. Each chapter tells the wonderful story of this greatly-used man of God. This biography will not only inform you, it will inspire you to attempt great things for God. Bush Aglow Richard Ellsworth Day This book is a reprint from Crown Christian Publications in Powell, Tennessee. This is probably the best biography of D. L. Moody that I have read. You really sense Moody's passion, drive, and zeal for the work of the Lord as you read through the pages. This book had been out of print for many years, but in 2003 Crown College and Clarence Sexton put it back into the hands of another generation. Great read for anyone interested in the life work of Moody. Biblical Mathematics Ed Vallowe Every library should have this classic work by Ed Vallowe. Dr. Vallowe was a pastor, author, and greatly used evangelist for many years. His expertise in biblical numerology was evident through his ministry and preaching. This easy-to-read booklet outlines the major numbers in the Bible and their hermeneutical significance. Numerology can be far-reaching if not careful, but Biblical Mathematics shows the consistency of particular numbers throughout the Word of God. God's Passion Bud Calvert God's Passion is the life-work of Pastor Bud Calvert. This book outlines the biblical formula for reaching the world God's way. Calvert declares how church planting is the key to world evangelism and missionary work throughout the world. If we are going to reach the world we need to plant more fundamental churches in America. This is more than a manual, this is a compilation of experience, knowledge, and biblical understanding of world evangelism and mission work. I wholeheartedly recommend that every preacher and pastor read this book and implement its principles into the ministry. Principles from the Parables Kenneth Kuykendall This is the latest book published by the Seed and the Sower Baptist Publications, it is also our first hardback book. I have taken ten very familiar parables of Christ and highlighted certain principles that need to be embraced. Because we live in the age of humanism, modernism, and religious pluralism, we have failed to govern our lives by absolute truth. This means that our generation has trouble with the smallest issues of morality and decency. More than ever we need biblical principles that guide our way of thinking. Visit our publications website to order. As a Roaring Lion Paul Schwanke This is a great read by Paul Schwanke. In this book, Evangelist Schwanke deals with the various devices used by Satan to defeat and discourage the people of God. His humor and matter-of-fact approach is balanced with the sober and solemn warning of being on guard against the lion "in the tall grass." This is a quick and easy read, but one that will certainly challenge you to be on the lookout for your adversary the devil. The Private Devotional Lives of Finney, Moody, and Spurgeon Leo Kingsbury Brown Republished by Larry Harrison Recently, Larry Harrison (The Book Man) was in attendance at our church. He gave me a copy of an old book that he and his ministry has reprinted. This is an inspirational booklet that details the personal devotion habits and experiences of three of the world's most prolific and powerful preachers. Certainly our generation needs to travel down the same roads where these giants in the Lord walked. Mr. Harrison travels the nation distributing books that he has put back into print. You will find that this book mirrors the ministry of Mr. Harrison- it is a complete joy. The Spiritual Leader Paul Chappell Paul Chappell and Striving Together Publications continually publish quality material. The Spiritual Leader is no exception. This book is written in a very practical and helpful manner. The heart and ministry of Dr. Chappell is exposed throughout the pages. One cannot help but see the servant-leadership model that Dr. Chappell embraces as they read through this book. I recommend that anyone in spiritual leadership or anyone interested in becoming a leader place this book upon their shelves. Decision Points President George W. Bush This highly-acclaimed book documents the various decisions that were made throughout the life and service of George W. Bush. It exposes his struggle with alcohol, his rambunctious personality, his devotion to family, and his faith in God. This book helps the reader see why Bush made certain decisions at certain times. Laced with hardship, terror, war, and national disasters, Bush's presidency is often mocked and criticized by the national media; however, this book shows the reasoning process behind some of those decisions that were deemed blunderous by the liberal media. No matter how you view the presidency of Bush, one thing you understand by reading this book is that he is a man of faith. To Try Mens Souls Newt Gingrich William R. Forstchen, Ph. D To Try Mens Souls is a fictional novel about George Washington as he crossed the Delaware in 1776 during the Battle of Trenton. Although this book is secular and does not promote any biblical principles; it does remind the reader of the determination and spirit that our country was built upon. In a day of political corruption, this book offers a refreshing reminder of the godly heritage of our great nation. Paul and His Letters John B. Polhill This is perhaps the most exhaustive and complete work of the life of Paul that I have ever read. Polhill examines in great detail the culture, life, ministry, and message of the great apostle Paul. He not only offers a scholary and technical survey of Paul's life, he examines the spiritual ramifications of the apostle's work. If you are looking for a thorough survey of the life of Paul you will definately want this book in your library. The Bible Explorer's Guide John Phillips This was one of my favorite text books in Bible College. John Phillips is a favorite writer of many pastors and preachers and this book really gives some great and practical ways to study and develop the Scriptures. From typology to understanding Hermeneutical principles, The Bible Explorer's Guide will be a tremendous help in your biblical exploration. The Size of the Soul A.W. Tozer Compiled by Harry Verploegh A.W. Tozer was a modern-day prophet. His ability to speak, write, and preach was the manifestion of a introspective and recluse lifestyle of meditation and prayer. This book compiled by Harry Verploegh is a collection of editorials taken from the publications ministry of Tozer entitled Alliance Life. The book contains 43 excerpts of Tozer's writings and exposes his ability to discern man's need for prayer and reliance upon God. The Shadow of the Broad Brim Richard Ellsworth Day This is another classic work by Richard Ellsworth Day. Reprinted in 2003 by Crown Christian Publications, this work has been reintroduced to another generation of believers. There are some who contend that The Shadow of the Broad Brim is perhaps the most definitive biography of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. From his days of adolescence to the moment of his death, Day does a wonderful job outlining the greatly-used life of the "prince of preachers." The Sacred Anointing The Preaching of Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones Tony Sargent This biography of Martyn Lloyd Jones is an extensive work of his life and ministry. Sargent does an excellent job of revealing how Jones truly relied on the Holy Spirit to equip him for the service of the Lord. If you are not familiar with the work of Dr. Jones this biography will thoroughly acquaint you with his ministry. A good solid read. The D.L. Moody Collection James Bell This book offers a biography of Moody along with classic sermons, devotions, and writings from the famed evangelist. One of the best sections of the book is entitled, "Why the Lord used D.L. Moody." Anyone interested in a simple and precise history of Moody will enjoy this read. Power in the Pulpit Jerry Vines Jim Shaddix This is a great work for the preacher looking for methods of sermon development. The need for expository preaching is great in our world. From selecting a text to preparing a conclusion, Vines gives some great insight in sermon preparation. This book not only helps the preacher develop the sermon, it also develops the preacher. Great read for all preachers who are convinced that expository preaching still works. The Tabernacle M.R. DeHaan Anyone interested in a serious study of the tabernacle would benefit greatly from this classic book by Dr. DeHaan. Thorough in its evaluation, and practical in its application, this work has been used for years as a guideline for tabernacle theology. DeHaan takes the reader from the outer court to the Holies of Holy without neglecting any detail. My favorite book on Tabernacle study. Study of the Types Ada Habershon Ada Habershon was a devoted friend to Spurgeon, Moody, Torrey, and Sankey. This is an incomparable work in the study of typology. Every student of the Word of God would benefit greatly from having this classic book in his library. I have yet to find a more helpful book in the field of typology. The Abolition of Man C.S. Lewis This classic work by C.S. Lewis deals with the moral quandry of mankind. Although Lewis is considered a liberal my many, his ability to rationalize the Christian worldview is definately worth the read. Though Lewis often takes the long route to prove his point in this book, once you arrive you will agree with his logic. Becoming a 1st Century Church Clarence Sexton Dr. Clarence Sexton has many books through Crown Christian Publications, but I believe this is by far the best book he has written. He earnestly opposes the contemporary church movement and our need to return to biblical, New Testament Christianity. The attempt to revamp church has been a lost cause. We should strive to become a 1st-Century Church. How Now Shall We Live? Charles Colson Nancy Pearcey This three volume book thoughtfully presents the practical and logical aspects of the Christian worldview. Regardless of your take on Colson, he does a great job in this book exposing the fallacies of Darwinism and humanism. The material is laid out in an organized and systematic manner with an easy-to-read style. This is another great apologetic work by Colson. The Power of Prayer R.A. Torrey The Power of Prayer is a classic on prayer, and is a must have for every Christian library. Not only did Torrey express the lack of prayer in our lives, he gave the results that prayer can have in a life that is committed to spending time with God. Not only is prayer our duty, it is our priviledge. Every preacher should read this once a year for a refreshing reminder of the importance of prayer in the ministry. More Precious Than Gold Dr. John Vaughn Brenda Vaughn Dr. Vaughn and his wife Brenda open their hearts to tell the story of the fiery trial of their faith, marriage, and life. At an early age their daughter was severly burned in a house fire. As they convey, this fiery trial exposed the crumbling aspects of their life. I had the privilege to meet Dr. Vaughn several years ago, and his humility and kindness brings testimony of a man who has went through the flames and discovered the all-sufficiency of Christ. This book will strengthen your faith. The New Absolutes William Watkins William Watkins exposes how absolute truth has been replaced by relativism. The "old" absolutes of marriage, life, sexuality, and morality have hypocritically been uprooted by modernists as the "new" absolutes of relativism have been embraced. As Watkins contends relativism cannot logically be accepted. This book is a must read for anyone interested in Christian apologetics. The Pursuit of God A.W. Tozer The Pursuit of God was poured out of the the soul of one of the most dedicated and eccentric servants of the Lord. This book will challenge you to leave the ordinary and enter into the holiness of Almighty God. Tozer points the believer to a life of sacrifice and surrender. This book will create in you a hunger and thirst to know and experience the Living God. By far this is one of my favorite books. Legislating Morality Norman Geisler Frank Turk Legislating Morality declares that America is "slouching toward Gomorrah." This book reveals how liberalism, secularism, and humanism imposes immorality on America by legislating ideas that are contrary to the Constitution. The authors systematically show how issues like homosexuality, abortion, and euthanasia are being pushed by radical politicians. In an age where absolute truth is being disregarded, it is refreshing to read a book that intelligently exposes the erroneous logic of political correctness. Church Still Works Paul Chappell Clayton Reed Dr. Paul Chappell and Clayton Reed put together one of the most practical analysis of the independent Baptist movement I have ever read. The information in this book will not only challenge you, it will encourage you about the state of our independent Baptist churches. By far, the most compelling element of the book is to create a burden for church-planting in the United States. This is the kind of book every independent Baptist pastor needs. Dr. Chappell's spirit of excellence is infectious and should challenge all Christian workers to maintain spiritual ambition. This is a must-read for pastors, preachers, staff-workers, missionaries, and laymen serious about the work of the church. He Restoreth My Soul Serving a God of Second Chances Kenneth Kuykendall This book details the biblical doctrine of restoration from the view point of twelve people who desperately stood in need of second chances. Such chapters include: He Restoreth My Soul from Doubt, Disease, Desperation, Depression, Discouragement, Depravity, and Death. Each chapter deals with a particular person from the Bible who discovered that our God is a God of restoration. |
